5-minute makeovers

I thought I'd show you a few little vignettes from a client's redesign I did recently that each took about five minutes (or less) but made a pretty big difference. (Or so I think.) This client is an ongoing one of mine...I've been there a couple of times and have a couple more to go. She is somewhat of a minimalist, but has collected just a few items throughout the years and from her many travels that have sentimental value.
She had a great start in this bathroom, having recently painted it a lovely light blue. She wanted to go for a beachy look, and had one or two framed pieces with an ocean theme, but wanted to pull the look together.
BEFORE...
cute starfish and towel, but what is in that basket?...
Nothing?? Just Easter grass?...
AFTER...
Ah, now it looks complete. After snooping in her cupboards, I filled the basket with extra washcloths, guest soaps, and an adorable miniature starfish. Now it's cute and functional...my two favorite words for bathroom decor.
BEFORE...
A lonely teddy bear and box of tissues...
AFTER...
...after snooping in cupboards again...a beautiful blue glass decanter, jar candle, and glass jar filled with river rocks and shells.
BEFORE....
the same client's hallway leading to the bathroom. She'd had these photos on the floor for about half a year, because she wasn't sure what configuration to hang them in...

AFTER...
There we go. I think they're happier on the wall, don't you?
Thanks for humoring me as I share these little projects! Stay tuned...tomorrow I'll have a wonderful interview with the very talented photographer, KA Compson, my pick for July's Artist of the Month!

  1. Think I'll go look for some of those makeovers around my house. Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. that really is inspiring... I'm going to use this to help me try to find some little things around the house that need a touch of fixing up- it's the little things that can make a big difference!
I love what you were able to do with the bathroom... unfortunatley, I know my 5 minute makeover isn't going to involve hanging pictures- I'm the type that'll find a place to hang them before I find a picture to put in them!

  8. I love the pictures on the wall...did you have a patter that you followed...or a "theme" going?

  9. Dawn - no pattern...the idea was to make it look somewhat random, so she could easily add more pictures as she wanted to. The theme was all photos from the client's travels...we actually eliminated about three framed pieces that didn't fit the theme and used those elsewhere. :-) Thanks for reading, guys!

  10. I was curious, is the largest framed picture (s) a custom frame job or did you pull it together? I really like how there are so many pictures in the frame with a nice back ground. I would like to do something similar. The mini make overs are fantastic. I like how you pulled the colors together. :o)

  11. Tricia Anne - the client did that herself! She used a large poster frame, with a background of wrapping paper, and layered in a collection of photos from one specific trip to Europe. It's a good solution when you have a lot of odd-sized photos to put together, or don't have (or can't afford) a frame with openings for many pictures.
