family room redesigned

This was one of those projects that was more about fixing furniture placement than anything else. The client had some beautiful artwork - and a lot of furniture! But it was all necessary since this family frequently hosts their large extended family and needed plenty of seating. I always view these things as not impossible, by any means, but simply a puzzle that I have yet to put together. This was one of those cases. But man, I'm starting to wonder how much longer I'll be able to do this while preggo? Anyone wanna be my assistant? I'll make you cookies?!

BEFORE...

AFTER...

thinking outside the box...we actually swapped a chair from the formal dining room (like the one on the left, above) with a recliner from the family room. Why? Simply because the formal chair was smaller and would not cut off the walkway in the family room quite as much as the recliner did. But they were all in complimentary colors, so it worked just fine.

BEFORE...
...(picture several little things on the mantel, too...I forgot to take a picture before I started clearing things off!)...
AFTER...
now the couch takes up the longest wall, rather than cutting off access between the family room and kitchen (it's an open floor plan).

BEFORE...

AFTER...
... just taking a few toys and books out of the bookcase enabled me to place the baskets and toys more neatly.

you guys...I'm sick AGAIN! What kind of cruel punishment is it to be sick in ADDITION to being preggo? haven't gone to the doc yet, but it resembles strep throat. good times. good times.

  5. If "Sell This House" ever comes to your area you have to promise to apply for a job on tv. :o) I love that you can SEE what a room needs.

    Feel better soon!!!

I'll be your assistant, Courtney! How fun would that be? I'd love working with you! Too bad the commute might be a bit much for me... :-)

Can't believe you're sick again. Bless your heart! Take care of yourself and feel better soon. -Julia

  8. looks great!

Hope you feel better soon! I'm fighting a cold too- hoping the kids don't get it... it's a struggle!

Is there a design school nearby that you could call for an intern? When I was in school we had to have... 40 hours?... of internship- and none of them paid. I was lucky to get one that took care of my parking costs! :)

  10. What an improvement! It looks great! And I would be your assistant in a heartbeat. Especially if there are cookies involved! :-)

I'd much rather help someone else than try to figure out my own mess. We built this house with a nice large family room and the intentions of purchasing new furniture. Well the new furniture isn't coming any time soon and working with what I have is making me CRAZY!!!

My hubby never knows what he's going to find when he gets home because I keep moving the furniture in hopes of getting it right.

Anyway, enough of my blah, blah, blah. I hope you start to feel better soon. Being sick when you're preggo totally stinks.

  11. I love looking at before & after photos. I love the fact that you're using the existing stuff and just rearranging- to create beautiful rooms!

I could really use your help on my living room! It's an odd shape and nothing really works. I have to work with what I have so that makes it extra tricky!

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling sick. Hopefully you'll recover quickly!

  12. We do have a lot in common! I need to chat with you more:-) I have been re-arranging friend's homes like this for a long time. How fun you actually get paid for this. It's tough when people don't have much to work with, but you did a great job here. Amazing what moving a few things can do to a room. Hope you feel better soon.
